Why I love Vancouver

I have so many fond childhood memories of boating adventures with my family. Many a summer holiday was spent exploring the beautiful Gulf Islands of the Strait of Georgia & the American San Juan islands as well. Galiano Island being a family favourite - Montague Harbour and the boater's campsite was like a second home to me. Here's a photo of my family on my grandfather John McGillivray's boat, the STRAIT SHOOTER, approx 1970 - hmmmm I wonder where I came up with the name of my business...

As a 5th generation Vancouverite, I love to look out on Vancouver from the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery (formerly the Vancouver Law Courts), imagining this place is the heart of the city - I can feel its pulse here. I envision my ancestors being in this exact spot, on these very steps, and their spirits surround me. Their love of this city is within me - running through my veins. I have photographs of my great grandfather, Carmen Ross, standing here on these steps when he was with the Vancouver Fire Department. He proudly served this city from 1916 to his death in 1950.

I stand in awe in front of the building my great great grandfather, JD Ross, constructed in 1909 for his business, JD Ross Showcase Factory at 291 E. 2nd Ave in Mount Pleasant. He built it strong enough to withstand all the winds of change over the last 114 years, and it stands proud and strong to this day. While I walk the streets and lane ways of this city, I never feel alone or nervous - my ancestors’ energies surround me as I retrace their steps on the same sidewalks past the same glorious buildings. As if they are guiding me safely on my journey.

Come along with me in this visual exploration of the people, places, & timeless moments that make Vancouver unique.
